The starter is the electric motor that cranks the engine — it dies by wear: brushes, solenoid contacts, and bearings, usually announcing itself for weeks before it quits completely.
Starters rarely fail without warning; they fail without the warning being understood
Heat is the accelerant: a starter soaked by a hot engine bay ages faster
A click with no crank, a crank that catches on the second or third try, grinding during crank, or a starter that works cold and refuses hot.
Single loud click, dash lights strong: the solenoid is firing but the motor is not turning — classic starter-side signature, batteries usually innocent
Intermittent starts that "fix themselves" are the starter scheduling its final failure
A crank that slows across weeks on a tested-good bank points at a starter drawing excess current
Lights and gauges strong, connections clean and tight, bank load-tested good — and it still clicks or cranks weakly: the suspicion moves to the starter and its cables.
A voltage drop test at the starter under crank settles it — that is the service truck's measurement (see the no-start diagnosis-order article in this series)
Do not buy batteries to test a starter theory: the bank gets blamed first because it is sold first, not because it fails first
Tapping a starter sometimes frees a stuck one for one last start — it is a get-to-the-shop move, not a repair, and on many modern starters it risks cracking the housing.
If it works, the destination is a shop or a service call today, not the delivery schedule as planned
Every successful hammer start is borrowed; the starter has already given its notice
A starter is a bolt-on component a mobile mechanic can change on the shoulder or in a lot — the diagnosis (starter vs bank vs cables) is what the call is really buying.
Cranking-system faults are a top-5 roadside system (TMC/FleetNet benchmarking) — this is a stocked, standard call for road service
Tell the dispatcher "clicks, won't crank, lights strong" — that routes the call as a starter-side job
